Sponsorships Available For Archives Building Dedication Good news! The new Polly Rosenbaum Archives and History Building will be dedicated on January 15, 2009. The Friends of Arizona Archives (FAzA) is seeking partners to help us raise funds for this event by becoming a dedication sponsor. FAzA members and other supporters worked for more than ten years to get the building funded and constructed. The dedication will honor Polly and everyone from legislators to librarians who helped make this facility a reality. It is a fitting way to devote the building to public use. Sponsorship of the event will place your name front and center, according to benefit level, before a select audience of legislators, state officials, and active citizens. All proceeds will go toward the event and supporting our efforts at preserving archival records across the State. Polly Rosenbaum knew the importance of remembering the past. She worked tirelessly to ensure that state records were carefully preserved so that future generations could learn from them and remember the important lessons of the past. She was a vocal advocate for the preservation of Arizona history in museums, libraries, and archives. Sponsorships are very important to the event?s success. To help FAZA achieve its goals, we hope to raise $10,000 in sponsorships (including in-kind donations). Our save the date email will go out November 15, so sponsors must be confirmed before then if they are to be included in the email announcement. If you would like additional information or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact FAzA President Doug Kupel via email or at (602) 380-9900. Membership Drive Please consider renewing (or starting!) your Friends of Arizona Archives (FAzA) membership! The membership year for FAzA starts July 1 to coincide with our fiscal year which runs from July 1 through June 30. If you have not recently sent FAzA a check, it means now is the time to renew! FAzA achieved tremendous success with the Polly Rosenbaum State Archives building: Attaining the final increment of funding in the spring of 2006, the groundbreaking in September of 2006, and the actual start of construction in January of 2007. When the recent budget crisis faced by the State has threatened to take away all of this hard work, FAzA supporters responded and prevented a drastic budget cut. Our success demonstrates the need for a strong and active membership. We also need a strong and active membership to support other initiatives such as National History Day awards, our contribution to the Arizona Historical Convention, and continued preparation for the move of the State Archives into the new building (including grand opening dedication!). To make continued progress, we need your help. Please take a moment to renew or start your membership and put FAzA on the path to continued success. Thanks so much for your support! FAzA Files Motion to Designate Bishop Thomas O'Brien Case as Historically Significant On April 24, 2008, the Friends of Arizona Archives (FAzA) filed a motion to have the case of Bishop Thomas O'Brien declared as historically significant. Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Barbara R. Mundell granted FAzA's motion on May 21. Documents from this important legal case are now permanently preserved. For additional information, including suggested forms to designate cases in your community as historically significant, refer to Court Cases under "Resources". Good News! The Legislature passed and the Governor signed the FY2008 budget adjustment bill (HB2620). This is good news because the bill limited the Archives Building funding cut to $2 million (instead of the $3.5 million that had been proposed). In addition, the Library and Archives agency cut was limited to $233,000 (instead of the proposed $270,500). It may seem like a small difference, but it is very important. This will allow for a measured and logical move into the new building so it can open on time this summer. A larger cut would have been a serious setback. Even so, the new building will need proper care and maintenance for years to come. Continued support will be needed in the future: for equipment, for staffing, and to restore items eliminated in the FY08 budget such as shelves. In the meantime, we can celebrate this compromise solution and look forward to the day when Arizona can dedicate the building to many years of productive use. Construction Has Started! The Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Polly Rosenbaum Archives and History Building took place on Wednesday, September 20, 2006. The location of the building site is on the west side of 19th Avenue between Jackson and Madison streets. At the time of the groundbreaking, a Supporters' Sculpture was unveiled by Speaker of the House Jim Weiers in the 1938 addition of the State Capitol. View the progress of the construction as of May!
